Anse Sévère

What it is

Anse Sévère lies on the north coast of La Digue, facing Praslin. Tourism Seychelles describes shallow water, slow tides and a reef offshore, and singles out the sunset over Praslin (listing updated 28 October 2024). SeyVillas gives the beach as 400 m by 5 m of sand. The Tourism Department's Beach and Sea Safety Guide lists Anse Sévère among the snorkelling sites it recommends in Seychelles.

Getting there

The coast road runs beside the sand, so there is no walk-in and no boat. Measured on OpenStreetMap from the La Digue Ferry Terminal at La Passe, the beach is 0.88 km away in a straight line. SeyVillas says there is room to leave a bicycle and to park. Patatran Village Hotel rents bicycles at SCR 100 per bicycle per day (hotel website, checked 20 September 2026). Taxis are few: the Ministry of Transport recorded eight taxi operators on La Digue, with provision for 12 club cars to work as taxis, when it published the island's land transport policy on 18 March 2022. No source consulted records an entry fee or opening hours, and none gives a cited walking or cycling time (Tourism Seychelles listing and SeyVillas beach page, checked 20 September 2026).

What is on the beach

Three drinks places here hold Tourism Seychelles registry listings. Bikini Bottom opens 10:00 to 20:00 daily for cocktails, smoothies, milkshakes, beer and snacks, takes cash in EUR, GBP, USD or SCR, or Visa, and rents masks for snorkelling (registry entry updated 12 December 2025, checked 20 September 2026). Karim's Fruit Bar sells smoothies and juices made with local fruit, cash only (entry updated 26 March 2026), and Turtle Beach Bar serves cocktails, also cash (entry updated 26 March 2026); neither publishes hours. SeyVillas adds a small snack shop and bar at the north end, a boutique and natural shade. Snorkeling Report records no public toilets or showers at the spot (page updated 9 February 2024).

The water

Tourism Seychelles describes shallow water and slow tides suited to casual swimming. SeyVillas says rock and coral formations shelter the bay with the drop-off beyond them, which is why it calls the beach safe for children, and warns that the sand can disappear at high tide and that seaweed may be present year-round. From its own survey of the spot, Snorkeling Report measures about 0.5 m of water over sand close in, says the reef flat can be too shallow to enter at low tide, and points to the passage at the southern edge of the beach in those conditions (page updated 9 February 2024).

Snorkelling

Snorkeling Report's own survey places the reef edge about 50 m from shore under 0.5 to 1 m of water, with a deep sandy area of 2 to 4 m behind it on the outer side. It records lined surgeonfish, powder blue tangs and schools of scissortail sergeants over the hard coral, spotted eagle rays sheltering at the foot of the reef especially at the end of the day, and hawksbill turtles seen sometimes but not reliably. It sets the level at intermediate and puts visitor numbers at medium (page updated 9 February 2024).

When to go

SeyVillas says the beach is generally only empty in the morning, and Tourism Seychelles points to the sunset at the other end of the day. The UK FCDO says the west coast is unsafe during the north-west monsoon (around December to March) and the east coast during the south-east winds season (around May to September); no source consulted says which applies to La Digue's north coast (checked 20 September 2026).

Safety

The Beach and Sea Safety Guide, 2nd edition (PDF created April 2019, posted on tourism.gov.sc in August 2022), says lifeguards are stationed at Beau Vallon on Mahé and at Anse Lazio and Côte d'Or on Praslin, and that there are no lifeguards at any other beach. Anse Sévère is not on its list of La Digue beaches carrying safety warning signs, which covers Anse Cocos, Grand Anse, Petite Anse and Anse Gaulette. The guide advises against swimming alone and says that a swimmer caught in a current should swim across it rather than against it. It gives the Seychelles Life Guard Services on 2529976 for advice on whether a beach is safe to swim from.

Anse Patates is 0.42 km north in a straight line on OpenStreetMap, with Anse Gaulettes beyond it; Snorkeling Report gives the gap as 250 m on its Anse Sévère page and 400 m on its Anse Patate page, so the two disagree. La Passe is 0.88 km south in a straight line.
