Snorkelling around Praslin and La Digue
Snorkelling around Praslin and La Digue in Seychelles centres on two marine national parks, Curieuse and Ile Cocos, and on beaches with reef within reach of the shore. Which spots suit depends on the season: the Seychelles Meteorological Authority describes rough seas in July and August.
Marine parks
- Ile Cocos: the Seychelles Parks and Gardens Authority calls it the most renowned snorkelling spot in Seychelles. The 85.55 ha park covers three islets, Ile Cocos, Ile La Fouche and Ilot Plate, and is known for hawksbill turtles. It is 10 minutes by boat from La Digue, and non-residents over 12 pay SCR 200 (SPGA, checked 16 September 2026).
- St Pierre: a granite islet in Curieuse Marine National Park. The tourism board describes a rich seabed with corals slowly recovering from damage.
- Curieuse and the Praslin shore: the park covers the channel between Curieuse and Praslin. The tourism board describes healthy corals along the Praslin side.
Other spots
The tourism board recommends Anse Petite Cour on Praslin's north coast for coral and butterflyfish, Ave Maria for canyons and reef fish, and Grande Soeur, where hawksbill turtles and white-tip sharks can be seen in deeper water.
From La Digue's beaches
Anse Sévère in the north has reef off the beach, and the tourism board suggests it for beginners. Anse Patates, at the northern tip, has calm water close to the shore. Anse Pierrot, south of Anse Source d'Argent, is shallow enough for paddling and snorkelling.
Seasons
The Seychelles Meteorological Authority describes April as the calmest month at sea and July and August as rough, with sheltered west and north-west beaches more pleasant from June to September. Tourism board articles give different best periods: one says March to May and September to November, another May to October.
Park rules
The Seychelles Parks and Gardens Authority (checked 16 September 2026) asks visitors not to collect shells, plants, coral or other marine life, and bans motorised water sports inside the parks. Boats must anchor or moor only in designated areas.
Where to go
Anse Lazio snorkelling
Praslin
Anse Lazio is a beach in north-west Praslin, framed by granite boulders, with clear water for snorkelling. It has no protecting reef and the water deepens quickly, so choose calm days, arrive before 9am and stay close to shore.
St Pierre islet snorkelling
Praslin
St Pierre is a tiny granite islet with a few coconut palms, 1.5 km off Pointe Zanguilles on Praslin, inside Curieuse Marine National Park. Its waters are a regular snorkelling stop on Curieuse boat trips from Côte d'Or.
