Anse Gouvernement

Anse Gouvernement is a curved, shallow bay on Praslin's north-east coast, just east of Côte d'Or, home to Hotel L'Archipel and a small juice bar. Calm water, snorkelling and fishing gear for hire, and seaweed in March. Roman Polanski's Pirates was filmed here in 1984.

The beach

Anse Gouvernement is a curved bay on Praslin's north-east coast, a short way along from Anse Volbert and Côte d'Or. Its length is not agreed: SeyVillas gives 600 m by about 5 m, while the OpenStreetMap outline (way 209431542, tagged sand, last edited 25 October 2014) measures about 220 m between its furthest points. Hotel L'Archipel stands on the beach, and outside the hotel's section the bay is usually quiet. SeyVillas notes that Roman Polanski's film Pirates was shot here in 1984.

Whose beach it is

The hotel's own home page advertises a "guests only private beach" (checked 20 September 2026), and SeyVillas recommends asking the hotels for permission if you arrive over land. OpenStreetMap labels the short beach segment about 190 m to the south-west "Private beach (not welcome here)" (way 309556460, last edited 25 May 2018) — a mapper's note, not an official sign.

The Beach Control Act (Cap 14) defines a beach as any part of the seashore and the seashore as the land alternately covered and uncovered at the highest and lowest tides, and it is that strip the Act and its regulations govern. The Act is a power for the Minister to make regulations; it says nothing about who may use a beach in front of a hotel. SeyVillas says arrivals by sea need not cross private land. Cast Away Cabana describes itself to Tourism Seychelles as sitting on Anse Gouvernement beach, en route to the L'Archipel Hotel (listing updated 26 March 2026).

Getting there

The nearest SPTC stops are the pair named L'Archipel Hotel, about 770 m away in a straight line, tagged as part of routes 61 and 62 and mapped on 16 November 2021 with no shelter tagged; the Au Cap pair, on route 63, is about 1.05 km away (OpenStreetMap). SPTC's published timetables cover Mahé routes only (checked 20 September 2026), so Praslin times come from the SPTC app or locally; its Visitor Travel Card gives unlimited travel on standard buses on Mahé and Praslin from SCR 100 or EUR 5 for a day. The road behind is mapped as single-lane concrete (way 1018400426) with an unpaved stretch (way 114870407), and a car park is mapped about 380 m away with no access or fee tags (way 1018400428). L'Archipel lists parking and car and bicycle hire among its hotel facilities. The Baie Sainte Anne jetty is about 3.1 km away in a straight line and Praslin Island Airport about 7.9 km.

In the water

The water is shallow with small waves, suited to swimming and snorkelling, and SeyVillas reports seaweed in March. There is no lifeguard: Tourism Seychelles' Beach and Sea Safety Guide, second edition, says lifeguards are stationed only at Beau Vallon on Mahé and at Anse Lazio and Côte d'Or on Praslin, and gives 2529976 for the Seychelles Life Guard Services (checked 20 September 2026). The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office says the east coast is unsafe during the south-east winds season, around May to September; the Seychelles Meteorological Authority puts those trades at their peak in August with rough seas.

What is there

Cast Away Cabana, a fruit juice bar on the sand, serves local juices, locally made chips, mocktails and cocktails (Tourism Seychelles listing, updated 26 March 2026). Hotel L'Archipel has two restaurants, La Gigolette on the beach and La Feuille d'Or on the first floor, with Bar Ton Francis beside the infinity pool, and lists a souvenir shop, billiard room, 24-hour reception and doctor on call. Its own factsheet lists a single and two-seater canoe, snorkelling equipment (mask, snorkel and fins) and a stand-up paddle board among the hotel's free activities, with the on-site dive centre, deep-sea fishing, bottom fishing and excursions to neighbouring islands payable (larchipel.com factsheet, updated 3 August 2026). SeyVillas lists a WC among the beach's facilities; OpenStreetMap maps no public toilets within 2.5 km (checked 20 September 2026). Palm trees give shade.

Behind and beyond

Seychelles Nation reported on 2 February 2022 that degraded wetlands had been restored on Praslin at Nouvelle Découverte, Cap Sammy and Anse Gouvernement under the Ecosystem-Based Adaptation programme; OpenStreetMap maps wetland about 500 m inland (way 1018400380, last edited 13 August 2022). SeyVillas' north-east Praslin guide mentions a trail from the eastern edge of the bay to Anse Matelot, about 15 minutes away; its Anse Matelot page describes the land route as dangerous, and OpenStreetMap names that beach "Anse Matelot (access by boat only)" (way 301666958, last edited 25 May 2018), so treat the path with care. Anse Volbert is about 1.3 km away by SeyVillas' measure.

SeyVillas describes the shallow water as good for snorkelling, with equipment for hire. Hotel L'Archipel's own factsheet lists snorkelling equipment — mask, snorkel and fins — among its free activities, with an on-site dive centre payable (larchipel.com factsheet, updated 3 August 2026).
