Anse Marron

What it is

Anse Marron sits at the southern tip of La Digue. Large granite formations close off a shallow saltwater pool from the ocean, and that pool, with its white sand and rock walls, is what people make the trip for. Anse Bonnet lies about 110 metres round the point to the south-west and Grand L'Anse about 510 metres back to the north-east, both in a straight line; the beach is about 1.8 km from Anse Source d'Argent and about 1.1 km from Grand Anse, again in a straight line, and the walking route is longer than either (OpenStreetMap, read 20 September 2026).

Why a guide is needed

There is no road and no simple path. OpenStreetMap carries one mapped route, "Way to Anse Marron", about 1.6 km long, graded demanding mountain hiking with trail visibility recorded as bad; its northern end is about 320 metres from Grand Anse and its southern end is the beach (read 20 September 2026). The Tourism Board advises booking a tour guide because the beach is hard to find, and warns that the path can be slippery and is not suitable for children. SeyVillas' hiking guide rates the route as hard and only possible with a guide: about 3 km, much of it over boulders, taking around six hours with breaks. The UK Foreign Office's Seychelles travel advice records that visitors have sometimes got lost on nature walks and hiking trails (read 20 September 2026).

What a guided trip involves

Sunny Trail Guide, a La Digue operator, runs the walk as a set itinerary: about two hours out to Anse Marron, around two hours at the beach and about two hours on to Anse Source d'Argent, six to seven hours in all (sunnytrailguide.net, read 20 September 2026). Its booking page through SeyVillas gives EUR 60 an adult and EUR 40 for a child aged 8 to 13, meeting at 08:30 at the La Digue helipad, a minimum of four walkers and a maximum of eight, with L'Union Estate admission of about SCR 150 charged separately (checked 20 September 2026). It is not the only registered guide: Blue Coral Trail Tours' walk also ends at Anse Marron (Tourism Board listing, updated 27 March 2026).

Tides, timing and the estate gate

The tide sets the direction: Sunny Trail Guide reverses the route when high tide falls in the afternoon (read 20 September 2026). Most groups set off between 7 and 9am because most of the route is in direct sun. Starting from Anse Source d'Argent means going through L'Union Estate, open 06:00 to 18:00 Monday to Sunday including public holidays, with an entrance fee of SCR 150 for foreign nationals and a pass bought after 16:30 valid the next day (lunion.estate, checked 20 September 2026).

Who it suits

Sources disagree about children: the Tourism Board and SeyVillas' beach page advise against bringing them, SeyVillas' hiking guide suggests about 10 as a minimum, Sunny Trail Guide's own site says from six, and that operator's booking page prices children from 8 to 13 and sets a maximum age of 60. The operator also excludes pregnant women, people with a fear of heights and people with limited mobility, and can cancel for weather or on grounds of physical condition (read 20 September 2026).

The water

With no coral reef off the south coast, SeyVillas says the open sea gets deep quickly and is unsafe for swimming, and waves rise with the trade winds. The enclosed pool is shallow and protected by the boulders, so bathe there. The UK Foreign Office's Seychelles travel advice says beaches at the southern tip are not suitable for swimming at any time, that there are not many lifeguards and that beaches do not always carry safety information; that advice is written for Seychelles as a whole and names no island (read 20 September 2026).

What to bring, and what is not there

Shoes with grip rather than flip-flops, 2 litres of water per person, sun cream, insect repellent, a waterproof bag for a phone or camera and a light towel (Sunny Trail Guide, read 20 September 2026); the operator's SeyVillas booking page adds a hat, a long-sleeved shirt and swimwear (checked 20 September 2026). Lunch on that operator's walk is a fruit platter. There are no facilities at the beach; the nearest restaurant mapped in OpenStreetMap is Loutier Coco at Grand Anse, about 1.15 km away in a straight line.
